Washed ashore on Lincoln Island, the castaways must transform a wilderness into a home—with little more than their knowledge, resourcefulness, and determination. Under the leadership of the engineer Cyrus Harding, they find food, shelter, clothing, tools, and the means to build a new life. Yet the island is not as deserted as it first appears. A bullet discovered in the body of an animal, a mysterious document, unexpected visitors, and inexplicable events unsettle the colonists’ hard-won security. As the volcano awakens and the settlers race to complete a vessel, the island’s deepest secret draws closer to discovery. Jules Verne’s classic adventure combines survival, scientific ingenuity, suspense, and the enduring mystery of an apparently uninhabited island. This Publica.now Classics edition includes a new typographic cover and publisher opening and closing pages. Sample ## Take a look inside THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND by Jules Verne 1874 CONTENTS PART 1. The sea is below the car! It cannot be more than 500 feet from us!” “Overboard with every weight! ... everything!” Such were the loud and startling words which resounded through the air, above the vast watery desert of the Pacific, about four o’clock in the evening of the 23rd of March, 1865. Few can possibly have forgotten the terrible storm from the northeast, in the middle of the equinox of that year. The tempest raged without intermission from the 18th to the 26th of March. Its ravages were terrible in America, Europe, and Asia, covering a distance of eighteen… [ Sign in to buy ](https://publica.now/access?redirect=%2Fcheckout%2Fthe-mysterious-island) The sample continues in the full work.
