In this third volume of The Innocents Abroad, the journey moves from the beauty of Lago di Lecco and moonlit Venice to Florence, Pisa, Rome, and Naples. Twain observes the splendor of St. Mark’s, St. Peter’s, the Vatican, the Coliseum, and Mount Vesuvius—but he is never content simply to admire. Relics are tested, legends questioned, guides exposed, and the solemn grandeur of history viewed alongside the ordinary comedy of travel. His account ranges from the silent majesty of the Coliseum to the crowded slopes of Vesuvius and the curious sights of the Bay of Naples. Witty, vivid, and sharply observant, this volume turns a continental tour into an entertaining encounter with art, antiquity, faith, commerce, and human nature. This Publica.now Classics edition includes a new typographic cover and publisher opening and closing pages.
