In Canto XXIX, Dante’s pilgrim encounters the forgers, their bodies disfigured by disease as they lie piled through the murky depths of Malebolge. The air is foul, the suffering relentless, and pity itself becomes a burden as Virgil presses him onward. Canto XXX brings further scenes of torment and deception, while Canto XXXI leads toward the final and most terrible region of Hell. The archaic music of Cary’s verse and the stark imaginative force of Dante’s punishments make these cantos a compelling passage through the moral architecture of the Inferno.
