What she finds is a young fugitive surrounded by armed riders from Shandar Province, where loving another woman is punishable by death. Kell knows the men have no authority beyond their border, but she also knows that protecting Shanya may put her own life and position at risk. After a hard-won escape, the two women take refuge at a village inn, where food and companionship offer Shanya her first taste of safety. Yet freedom is more than crossing a border. Shanya must learn to live without the family, servants, and rules that once defined her, while Kell confronts the burden of protecting someone vulnerable, and the growing attraction between them. In a world of Rangers, magic, ancient knowledge, and cruel provincial law, rescue is only the beginning.
